According to (Easterby-Smith, Thorpe and Jackson, 2008) most sources inform on the importance of research as a component to be included by the management in the process of making decisions. Existing literature about research validate the need for the management to be always investing on ongoing research and considering the reports from research during decision making.
Some examples that can be used to describe the importance of research information on management include the role of international assignment that provide important information regarding evaluation in the global economy. Unlike most other migrants, assignees at international level enjoy are able to acquire privileged opportunities in the labor market due to the information that they provide to management in through research. In the international setting, the traditional perception of management is highly disregarded and the management focuses on making decisions based on empirical data collected directly from the field in order to remain sensitive to time and changes.
In some instances, the managers will find themselves working within their cultural context. However, this is not always the case, some managers may find themselves placed in a region whose culture is different from their own. In such a case it is important to examine the effect likely to be brought about by the ethnic or cultural diversity in the host region or country. Expatriate managers mostly find themselves encountering considerable obstacles in their newly situated places of work (Malmi and Ikäheimo, 2003).
For the individual manager, they can access numerous significant research about the process of adjustment to help them rely on social identity and acculturation by reading the theories that explain the new and sometimes sudden change. However, the transition process for the individual manager require time for them to adjust, adapt and integrate their skills and expertise into the new culture to create a working platform for decision making. To achieve this platform there is a lot of information that needs to be acquired through research to ensure that sounds and positive-impacting decisions are being made.
Cross-cultural training and expatriate adjustment can sometimes be challenging. A study that was done in Nigeria examined the adjustment process of expatriates from the Western. The research found that multinational corporations face various challenges in retaining expatriates for global activities. The research reported that 10-80% of expatriates sent to implement assignments in foreign destination will usually go back to their mother land before the completion of the assignment. The major reason given by these expatriates is the inability of the expatriate or their spouse to adapt to the new environment and culture. It is only through research that the workers and managers can get a chance to acquire important information about the host culture, the expectation in the new employment post (Firk, Schrapp and Wolff, 2016). Once they have this kind of information it would provide an opportunity for managers to make informed decision, plan their activities accordingly and anticipate possible failure in order to react accordingly on a timely manner. Poletti Hughes, (2009) reports that using research information in decision making includes the manager evaluating the research provided and including the opinions in the reports while making plans, implantations or intervention. Some research findings are more detailed than others in terms of content while others provide vast scope of information about various issues across the file of study. In general, making decision from a research informed aspect makes one a competent leader and manager. Forming a habit of using research information in decision making ensure that decisions made are conscious to time and changes.
